The veneration of the Libaniego Lignum Crucis has been a reason for pilgrimage since the Middle Ages. It is the largest recognized fragment of the Cross of Christ, as historical evidence confirms. What pilgrims receive is a modern replica from the Middle Ages. The year 2023-24 will be another Holy Year of Libaniego and the Gate of Forgiveness in the Sanctuary of Santo Toribio will open.

Cantabria is a region in northern Spain with a mild climate all year round, which allows for sporting activities, especially horse riding, at any time of year on trails through green forests. The mild summer is also ideal for this. The cuisine is rich and varied, and the wide range of high-quality rural accommodation makes it a very attractive destination.

The pilgrimage route of the Holy Cross is divided into six days and covers a distance of 170 km. It starts on the coast of Astillero (opposite Santander) and heads southwest to the Picos de Europa, where the monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana is located.

It passes through towns such as Puente Viesgo, Castañeda, Tudanca, Bárcena Mayor, Los Tojos, and Potes. Along the way, you will cross natural parks such as the Saja Reserve, Romanesque monuments, and the magnificent El Soplao cave.

Itinerary

Accomodation
You will spend the night in carefully ed typical Spanish middle-class hotels and country houses. Lunch is usually served as a picnic, always with several courses and a chupito (herbal schnapps). You will enjoy dinner at the hotel, with table wine included.

Saddle & Tack: Spanish saddles (vaquero) and double bridle. The stirups, the so-called coal boxes are unusual, but comfortable with a large footrest.

Experience: You should have ridden regularly for at least 3 years and be able to ride other horses in all gaits without instruction.

Horses: Andalusian and Spanish mix, with good character, persistent and sure-footed.
